7 Things to Know to Avoid After Laser Hair Treatment

Laser hair removal is one of the best things you can do for yourself. It is one of the most innovative hair treatment options on the market today. Unlike other methods, this process prevents ingrown hairs and leaves the skin softer than before.

It neither leaves scars nor creates any painful side effects. More importantly, it gives you lasting results.

If you recently had your laser hair removal appointment, you need to know the aftercare techniques that ensure your treatment succeeds. Here are some post-treatment reminders that you should follow:

1. Do not do any hair removal treatment besides shaving

You cannot pluck, wax, tweeze, or thread the hair in your treated area. Doing any of these would mean removing the roots of the hair. These roots are important because the laser targets them in the process.

The treatment will try to deactivate these hair follicles by cutting their blood supply and weakening them. Shaving is the safest method as it does not disrupt the hair cycle.

Important note: Do not shave right after your treatment. Wait four to five days before you let anything near your underarm. This duration is enough to help your skin recover.

2. Wait for 24 hours before applying any topical products

The skin is extra sensitive after laser treatment, so it is best to wait for at least 24 hours before applying anything to it. Make sure to ask your clinic about what you should do if you experience any itching and redness. Usually, they recommend aloe vera.

If you had the treatment done on your face, you are discouraged from applying any makeup or skincare products for 24 hours. Should you need to apply some, it would be best to use mineral-based cosmetics for safety and make sure to go for a light look only.

3. Avoid direct sunlight and other UV ray exposure

Remember that your skin is sensitive after a laser hair removal session. Exposing it to UV rays could lead to skin damage. As much as possible, avoid direct sunlight exposure during the entire duration of the treatment and the two to four weeks after your last treatment. Make sure to apply sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin.

4. Wear loose clothing

By wearing loose clothing, you can avoid any friction between the skin and clothes. It is one way to prevent irritation. Moreover, your hair follicles may retain some heat from the treatment. Loose clothing would allow your skin to breathe.

5. Avoid any hot water or any heat after your laser hair removal

If you do not want to damage your sensitive skin after laser hair removal, do not have hot showers or hot baths for 48 hours. Avoid going to steam rooms, saunas, and other humid environments for seven days. All these could hamper your skin’s recovery.

6. Do not scrub or apply pressure onto the skin

Avoid excessive scrubbing, exfoliating, and pressure on your skin for at least four to five days. During this time, let your skin recover first. Avoiding these could also help you prevent possible infections as well.

7. Never scratch or rub your treated skin

Should you experience any itching on your skin, avoid scratching or rubbing. Instead, apply aloe vera or your clinic’s recommended product to alleviate skin irritation and hasten its healing.

Conclusion

Laser hair treatment can give you satisfying and long-lasting results, but you need to follow these directions before you get to enjoy its full effects. Keep in mind that your skin will be sensitive post-treatment, but it will soon recover with extra care. These little sacrifices can benefit you in the long run.
